Hour Requirements
Each YEAR, members must complete a total of 14 hours, recorded on the hours sheet at the bottom of the page. It is recommended that members print the sheet as soon as they are accepted into the society in order to start earning hours as soon as possible. Partial hours are collected at the end of each semester. The following categories make up the required hours:
*Teacher help (minimum of 1 per semester) - this includes grading papers and general help around the classroom. Teacher help can only be done in Sanchez's, Bowman's, or Furches' rooms.
*Tutoring (minimum of 1 per semester) - members can only tutor students taking a Spanish class that the member has taken before. A Spanish IV student cannot tutor an AP student. Tutoring must be done in a Spanish classroom.
Members must complete a minimum of ONE teacher help and ONE tutoring hour per semester. The other two hours are your choice (choice of teacher help or tutoring, not culture/service!), making FOUR teacher help and tutoring hours total. If not completed, penalty hours will be assigned. We will update the spreadsheet accordingly (linked below).
*Service to Society (3 per year) - these can be achieved by attending the induction ceremony, going to a linner after school, decorating the bulletin board (signup on other page), wrapping gifts in December, and participating in other events during the school year.
*Culture (3 per year) - members can receive culture hours by attending a Hispanic festival or Spanish Mass, watching a movie in Spanish, restaurant comparison, or making a food comparison/show and tell. Unless the guidelines say otherwise, all culture hours require a 200 WORD ESSAY in Spanish. Staple essays to the hours sheet. Culture hours CANNOT be repeated (must be 3 different activities, not just 3 different movies).
Most culture hours also require some form of documentation.
What is turned in and when:
At the end of first semester (January 30): four hours of any combination of teacher help and tutoring hours, provided that members have at least one of each.
At the end of second semester (exact date TBD): another set of four hours with the same criteria, plus all three culture hours and all three service to society hours.
Penalty hours
Not completing all required hours by the turn-in date does NOT automatically mean that members are removed from the society; instead, members earn penalty hours. These will be recorded on the hours spreadsheet (at the bottom of this page) and should be made up before the next hours turn-in. Major amounts of missing hours or hours missing for multiple semesters will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
Important Documents
Below (on the left) is the chart on which you will record all the hours you earn. Service to Society hours all require a signature from an officer or advisor. Culture hours usually do not, but a signature doesn't hurt if you're unsure. All the culture hours listed do not require a signature.
Below (on the right) is the spreadsheet on which all members' hours are compiled at the end of each semester. This is especially helpful in second semester if you have forgotten what hours you already earned first semester, or if you have penalty hours.
Note: You must be on your school account to access the hours spreadsheet.

- Festival or Mass service - staple a program to your hours sheet or take a picture. Picture can be of the program with your name on it, you at the festival/service, etc., just something to prove you were there, stapled to the hours sheet or sent over Remind to an officer. For festival guidelines, click here. For Mass service guidelines, click here.
- Movie - no documentation needed; the essay should sufficiently prove you watched and understood the movie. For movie guidelines, click here.
- Restaurant comparison - take a picture of you there, of your food, of the menu...something to prove you ate there (at both places), stapled to the hours sheet or sent to an officer. For restaurant comparison guidelines, click here.
- Food comparison or food show & tell - take a picture of you preparing the food; staple the picture to the hours sheet or send it to an officer. For food comparison/show & tell guidelines, click here.
